What is ‘Mindset’ and how can it help me ?

In my work as a coach, this is a commonly used term, but what is it ?

Maybe you think its just Positive thinking mumbo jumbo and you dismiss its relevance and importance in your life.
Or maybe you are aware of the benefits of Mindset work and you want to learn more.
The fact is, what you tell yourself affects how you feel and how you behave every day in every situation.

If you work in a busy work environment with a lot of pressure, perhaps to meet targets, perhaps due to the level of responsibility, then learning about mindset and creating daily habits for controlling your thoughts is essential to your sanity and performance!

Do you pay attention to your thoughts?
Do you practice managing your own thoughts?
Did you even know that this was a thing ?

So many people just go through everyday life with the thoughts which present themselves, without realising that you can choose what to think.

Let me give you a real life scenario.
Imagine this;

You see an advertisement for a job or promotion you would love. You know you can do it and you request an application. You submit all your information, detailing your qualifications, skills and experience to demonstrate you meet the criteria and are an excellent candidate. You are buzzing.

2 weeks later you receive the e-mail you have been waiting for offering you an interview.

First of all you get that feeling, …..and then you think;

Oh Shit !!!!
Ive got an interview.
I hate interviews . I will probably be crap. I’ll never get the job. What if I fail. Everyone will think ……

And so the preparation for the interview, for the job you really wanted begins with fear, self doubt, self sabotage, self criticism.

Does this resonate with you ?

Your scenario may not be an interview, it could be an important meeting, a presentation, a social event, a date. …. Regardless of the scenario – It is the negative thoughts and self talk that are undermining your chances of success and your experience of the situation.
This kind of thinking exacerbates stress, anxiety, overwhelm which can lead to physical and emotional ailments.

But do not despair… this is a good news story.

If you can so effectively use your imagination to create doom, you can also affectively use your imagination to create your best outcome.

What if you had confidence in your own ability!
What if there was no such thing as failure – just an opportunity to learn!
What if other peoples opinions did not matter!

Then the scenario would go like this;

First of all you get that feeling …. And then you think;

Excellent I got my interview
I am excited to show the panel what I can bring to the job
Its time to start to prepare.

What is missing in this scenario which was present in the first one?

FEAR!  (or more specifically the old thought pattern or limiting belief which created the feeling of fear even though there was no danger present )

The feeling now is excitement and your Focus is on what you want to achieve and on your capabilities .

In my work as a coach I have helped many people to overcome their limiting beliefs and negative thoughts, to create a positive mindset, to feel confident, to gain control and positive change in their lives.

By developing Mindset habits you can become more aware of your thoughts,
And learn to take control of how you use them.

Begin your day by setting your intention – this means deciding on how you want to feel and what you want to achieve that day.
It doesn’t have to be a big thing – You could do this in the shower. So, instead of creating dread for the day ahead, tell yourself that it is going to be a good day.

Decide that you will not allow others to anger you or discourage you.

Remind your amazing self that you are capable of dealing with whatever comes your way.

Throughout the day practice the habit of noticing your thought patterns and the feelings they induce. Change the pattern to one of creating the thoughts that will induce positive emotion, that will encourage you, motivate you, foster self confidence, self worth and self belief.

You are in charge of your mind and therefore your results.

Taking control of your thoughts will result in better performance, increased success and a happier, healthier more fulfilling experience in your daily life.
